About Lake Taylor Senior Design

Project Statement

The Lake Taylor neighborhood is a residential neighborhood in Norfolk, Virginia. This neighborhood is named after Lake Taylor, a nearby level 2 stormwater pond, that is connected to the Elizabeth River. The community has reported issues of flooding and low water quality in Lake Taylor. These issues arise from a naturally high-water table in the area, increased impervious land use due to urbanization, and increased storm frequency and intensity due to climate change. These situations lead to decreased infiltration capacity and capability, increased runoff intensity, and ultimately flooding and decreased water quality.

The combined effects of these issues in the neighborhood has brought the City of Norfolk, Wetlands Watch, the Elizabeth River Project, and the Lake Taylor Civic League together to research solutions to remedy the low water quality and mitigate flooding. The location of the flooding and pollution hotspots and the community’s response to potential solutions have been researched. Now our mission is to design low-impact stormwater system improvements and rainwater harvesting techniques to achieve increased water quality and minimize flooding.
